Este livro é um relato do assassinato e da política na África e uma etnografia histórica das comunidades do sul de Annang durante o período colonial. 

A narrativa leva a acontecimentos entre 1945 e 1948, quando o olhar imperial da polícia, da imprensa e dos políticos se concentrou numa série de mortes misteriosas no sudeste da Nigéria atribuídas à “sociedade do homem-leopardo”. 

Estes misteriosos assassinatos, relatados como a “maior e mais estranha caça ao assassino no mundo”, não eram apenas casos forenses, mas também relacionados com o amplo impacto histórico das relações comerciais, religiosas e colonial da sociedade de Annang com os colonizadores.

O Journal of Music Archaeology (JMA) é o primeiro jornal de acesso aberto com revisão duplo-cego no campo da arqueologia musical, dando continuidade ao espírito da série Studien zur Musikarchaeologie, anteriormente publicada pelo DAI. 

Aborda questões relativas à arqueologia do comportamento sonoro e rítmico de culturas passadas em todo o mundo, incluindo o estudo e a reconstrução de possíveis ferramentas sonoras, a investigação de paisagens sonoras, especialmente quando têm com questões históricas e antropológicas. 

Assim como a pesquisa etnológica baseada em iconografias, literaturas e estudos comparativos que refletem a ampla gama de abordagens e metodologias que caracterizaram a arqueologia musical desde os seus primórdios.

The sensory ecology of deception in human societies

A próxima terça-feira, 7 de maio, às 18h30, horário de Londres, o antropólogo evolucionista Will Buckner (Universidade de Boston) analisa dentro do ciclo de palestras organizado por Radical Anthropology o papel do engano e da imitação, desde a caça até os rituais e práticas xamânicas. 

Os humanos são hábeis em explorar os preconceitos sensoriais de membros da mesma espécie e de outras espécies. Os caçadores imitam a aparência, as maneiras e as vocalizações das suas presas, os xamãs usam a prestidigitação em práticas curativas dar a aparência de poderes impressionantes, e os especialistas em rituais usam disfarces que incorporam espíritos ostensivamente poderosos e criaturas míticas como uma ferramenta de controle social. 

O palestrante recorrera a estudos de caso etno-históricos para demonstrar a prevalência e a importância destes fenómenos nas sociedades humanas ao longo da história humana. 

As performances fantásticas e musicais envolvendo a personificação estratégica de outros agentes são um fenómeno comportamental recorrente e pouco explorado em todas as sociedades, que tem importantes implicações evolutivas sob como os humanos pensam, enganam e avaliam a reputação dos outros.

As Lupercalia em comparação védica

A indo-europeista Laura Massetti acava de disponiviliçar uma palestra proferida o dia 04 de abril de 2024, Krešimir Vuković (Universidade de Praga) na Universidade de Nápoles “L'Orientale” com o título “Comparando Religião Romana e Védica: A Lupercalia como Estudo de Caso”. 

O objectivo do palestra foi ilustrar as principais características do antigo ritual romano e tentar remontar algumas das suas características às migrações dos proto-indo-europeus.

Este livro é uma biografia e história da recepção da arqueóloga lituano-americana Marija Gimbutas (1921–1994). Apresenta o primeiro relato transnacional da vida de Gimbutas com base na pesquisa histórica e um exame original da influência de suas ideias em vários contextos feministas, tanto acadêmicos quanto populares.

No centro deste livro está a história de sucesso de uma mulher do Leste Europeu que sobreviveu às ocupações soviética e nazista em sua terra natal, viveu como uma pessoa deslocada na Alemanha da pós-guerra e construiu sua carreira e autoridade acadêmica dentro da androcêntrica academia  americana. 

Ao mesmo tempo, é também a história de uma controvérsia que se seguiu à teoria da Velha Europa de Gimbutas, uma civilização pré-histórica, caracterizada pela paz, pelo igualitarismo, pela liderança feminina e pela adoração da Grande Deusa. Introduzida pela primeira vez em 1974, esta teoria inspirou movimentos de mulheres em todo o mundo, mas foi duramente criticada por outros arqueólogos. Este livro examina os vários contextos intelectuais (feministas, nacionalistas, teóricos) nos quais as ideias de Gimbutas foram formadas, recebidas e interpretadas, bem como apropriadas para diferentes objetivos políticos.
